Tony Stewart held his ground and perhaps his breath in the final laps of today's 400 mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Auto Club Speedway to earn his first race on the two mile oval in Fontana, Calif. Stewart was one of the dominating drivers and had made a move back to the front, building a gap between his Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet and those chasing him for the victory when the final caution came into play. "Oh man, they (his No. 14 Office Depot team) did an awesome," smiled Stewart. "They did an unbelievable job in the pits that got us an opportunity again. Both races we have won, we have won because the pit crew gave us a chance and that is all you can ask for."
David Regan moved up high, forcing Kurt Busch into the wall with seven laps to go. The clean-up ate away four of the slow caution ran laps, opening the door to the double file restart with Jimmie Johnson on the low side since Stewart elected the outside line. A line-up that had the fans standing for the final 3 laps dash. Johnson in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was no match for Stewart who pulled out just enough of a gap to keep the lead.
Johnson had pressure on his rear from Clint Bowyer in yet another Chevrolet, from the Richard Childress Racing stables. Behind the trio were packs that were charging at times five to six wide to find the perfect spot to gain positions or hold one. It was Stewart who found the "sweet spot" as the race was in its final stages and even the final of the nine cautions did not slow him down or keep him out of victory lane.
"I was all over the track today trying to find different spots," explained Stewart. "It seemed like at the beginning of a run, and the later the day got, the more we could stay down on the bottom and be decent. I know Jimmie was running about a little over half way up in three and four. It depended on how long we ran; if we ran long enough, we were all on the top in one and two. It is just having the confidence to hunt around when you need it to and then get out of your comfort zone and move to a different spot."
The Indiana native did beat out the "local" favorite when the two were side-by-side to see whose hood nose would beat out the other but in reality, many Californians are fans of Stewart, cheering him on to victory.
Bowyer crossed the line in second followed by Johnson in third for a 1-2-3 Chevrolet finish. Johnson still holds the points lead as he aims for his firth consecutive championship.
The leading trio at the checkered flag all notched five bonus points as race leaders but it was Mark Martin who had the most laps as the leader. Martin led for 41 laps, just one more than Bower who truly felt he had the victory in his hand when a caution for debris came out. Martin finished sixth.
Handing the Stewart-Haas team an extra reason to smile was Ryan Newman who finished fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Kevin Harvick (Chevrolet), Denny Hamlin (Toyota), Jeff Gordon (Chevrolet) and David Reutimann (Toyota).
Johnson retained the points lead with Hamlin still in second. Harvick sits third followed by Jeff Gordon. Stewart is fifth.
